Abstract
The population of elderly patients in the Korea with symptomatic coronary artery disease continues to increase. Although coronary artery bypass graft has been shown to prolong life in these patients and to relieve symptoms to a degree similar to that in younger patients. For this reason, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a potentially attractive and less invasive alternative to bypass surgery in elderly patients. So our study was done to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty in elder coronary artery disease patients.
Patients were grouped as group1 (age below 49), group 2 (age 50-64) and group3 (age over 65)for the consecutive patients who underwent coronary angiography and PTCA from Sep. 1994 to Mar. 1996.
Unstable angina was more frequent and the intervention rate was higher in the elderly patients. The overall initial success rates of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty for the group 1,2 and 3 were 89.2%, 90.7% and 95.1% respectively.
We concluded that percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was an effective therapeutic modality for elderly patients.
